With Nextcloud, you have to install and maintain the service/server yourself or pay a 3rd party host to do it for you. This requires some technical knowledge, willingness, and some investment upfront. Nextcloud is not "register an account & go", unlike Google Photos.

It can even handle raw photos, if the appropriate app is installed.

As far as I'm aware, aves is just a photo gallery, not a cloud storage platform.

One of the best alternatives for the offline capabilities of Google Photos (gallery, view, edit), i.e. similar to Fossify Gallery. Needs to be complemented with another app for cloud save / backup use-case.

Piwigo is good but its really for photos only. Video support requires the complex process of adding and configuring a special plugin. It also lacks object tagging and image recognition.

Piwigo has come a long way since I first tried it. It’s great alternative method of storing photos in a cloud. It it is open source and can be self hosted. However, if you are not capable of managing your own LAMP stack, it appears you can get a hosted service at piwigo.com

Focus Go is the gallery I always wanted to have, so I built it. I don't like bloated galleries with 23093485 features, so I only built the ones I need/think are needed.
