garret is a free, open-source writing studio for novelists. It keeps your manuscript, story planning, research, and revisions together on your own disk. You can write offline without creating an account.
On desktop, organize your book into parts, chapters, and scenes. Write in a focused editor, arrange scenes in outline cards, keep a story bible and character profiles, and follow events on a timeline. Comments, scene history, and revision tasks help you work through the next draft. Exchange DOCX review documents with an editor and accept or reject attributed proposals.
Export Markdown, DOCX, or EPUB. Prepare front and back matter, covers, and book design before export; Linux also supports PDF proof copies. Local recovery tools and manual encrypted archives help you keep copies of your work.
garret supports Linux, Windows, and macOS, with a smaller Android library and scene editor. Choose light or dark mode and English or German. Every feature is free under GPL-3.0-or-later, with no subscription or paid feature unlocks.
This is an early alpha. Keep backups and start with sample writing or a copy of your work. Android has fewer features and no automatic book sync; its current preview has no user-facing import/export. macOS builds need native tester feedback.
