Best free alternative to Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro. I've used it for the past 5 years since I switched from paid Sony Movie Studio and I don't regret it. The UI is simple and intuitive.
It is my go-to video editor and animation software. I can't believe it's not more popular.
After FXhome merged with Artlist, it became a cesspool of a software. No more perpetual licenses, no more templates, no more community made plugins (I bought almost all of them). Instead, with HFE 2022 and on, you get a basic video editor where everything is cloud baed. You can choose some type of music, some type of transitions, some type of effects. Creative freedom is a lost memory. Oh, and did I mention you no longer can download elder Hitfilm versions? Yep, even if you planned to buy perpetual license of Hitfilm Pro, you can't. The only way to recover your assets and your purchases is downloading them directly from your account history. I'm so sorry to write this review, since I LOVED Hitfilm Express, despite its many flaws. And I loved the fact you got a huge growing community ready to help you out and to teach you many tips you didn't even think they existed. And the fact that plugin purchases were partially devolved to charity organizations, made this company and this software stand out for me. Still I'll be using it for special effects, motion graphics and video editing (as my go-to software), but as of now, I truly discourage anyone from learning and using it - despite it being "free".
2025 EDIT: HitFilm is officially dead. Artlist killed it. Time to find a more serious software from a more serious company.
HitFilm Express is "Technically" gone, it's been replaced by a free version where it's functionally the same. The downside is now you can't buy independent parts for the program if you need them, you are forced to either pay for Hitfilm Pro (over $300) or... PAY FOR A SUBSCRIPTION.
It's still a strong software, it's funny because I just got them the day before they switched over.
Hitfilm Express is an exceptionally good video editor. It has a lot of features that you would find in Adobe Premiere. However, it is not perfect. There are some features missing in the app that would be nice to have. It should have more audio effects such as a limiter, compressor, etc. Since I use OBS to record, you are not able to drag in clips that have multiple audio sources inside of the file. It is extremely specific, but it is kind of a dealbreaker. That is only my problem with Hitfilm. But there are plenty of good things in Hitfilm Express. Such as their video effects, they are amazing! They are always improving Hitfilm and I recommend it for beginners.
HitFilm has come a long way in the past few years, adding GPU acceleration, higher resolutions, greatly improved speed and stability, better motion tracking, 3D environment workflows (not just 3D animation, but tracking 2D footage to add 3D objects, backgrounds etc), better sound, and compatibility with files and plugins from other film editing software ecosystems. The free version does not come with the best plugins, nor does it have the best motion tracking built-in, but it is still a very capable non-linear and composite editor, as well as allowing 3D animations. Well worth a try, you will be impressed.
Full-featured free version, intuitive user interface, very fair add-on pricing system that doesn't break the bank
