There's really no "bot detection" here, itis just proof of work so should be labelled as a rate limiter.

I've never used Friendly Captcha but just from their description on their website, I can tell that it doesn't work. They say that how it works is, the user's computer completes a task in the background whilst they use the website. What's stopping a bot's computer from completing the task? Maybe it uses up computing power which acts as a significantly drain on a bot which is posting thousands of fake reviews or something, but it seems a bit far-fetched that this would actually stop bots.

Its Free and Open Source software. Free accounts get 1000 free registrations per month. This is more than enough for our website.
Edit 2:I just noticed that you can likely circumvent it, because there is nothing to indicate that actually checks if the input comes from a human. … So it happily verifies that this is a browser used by a human, where the browser is “solving a unique crypto puzzle” … and then doesn’t seem to care if a bot fills the form an submits it. … If that is true, then that’s basically a huge facepalm. XD … I’ll have to investigate.
Plus, it is apparently online. Not offline. That’s already a no-no, and doesn’t align with any claim to be GDPR-compliant. Because you still have to declare that you are using a different server by a different company. And blindly trust their claim to be compliant. (Just look up “Doctolib "Big Brother Award"” so see how that goes… ^^)
Original comment: Questionable privacy. Says they are “Made in Europe”. What does that mean? Russia is Europe. The UK with its Five-Eyes GHCQ is Europe. Swiss Intelligence is Europe. And even if it’s the EU, The NSA lapdog BND is Europe. The French laws just changed in a horrible way too …
To me it sounds like eyewash typically used by black-eyed or deluded people who believe “our” spying agency is “good”. In other words: People with no clue what is secure. On top of it being unnecessary nationalism.
Edit: It’s a German company. Doesn’t mean it’s actually made under that jurisdiction though. It just means the BND and NSA that definitely got leverage over it. Also, Germans shouldn’t exactly be the ones to boast with nationalism. Let alone continent-spanning nationalism. ^^

Best alternative out there
Best captcha option
The PoW concept of Friendly Captcha is very smart. It’s a better alternative to reCAPTCHA as it doesn’t store personal data and users don’t have to do labeling tasks like “click on the cars”. I can recommend it.
