What is Find my Sun?

Most sunset apps tell you when the sun goes down. Find my Sun tells you where to go to actually see it.

In hills and mountains, the sun often disappears behind a ridge long before the astronomical sunset. Find my Sun traces the whole path of the sun over a real 30 m terrain model (Copernicus GLO-30) and shows, on a map, which spots still have a clear view of the sun at sunset and which are blocked. For example, in Val Gardena on 21 June a naive calculation promises a high, colourful sunset at 1.8°, while the sun really sets behind the Sassolungo at 29.8°, almost two hours earlier.

Features

  • Sunset heatmap around you: full sunset, partial (sun lost high but still colourful), or blocked
  • Exact time and altitude at which the sun disappears for each spot
  • Scenic spots list and a "Feeling lucky" button that picks a good spot nearby
  • Roads and trails to reach the spot (Pro)
  • Satellite view
  • Calculation runs on your device from pre-computed horizon data, with worldwide coverage

Good to know

  • Free with ads; a one-time in-app purchase (Pro) removes them
  • Android only
  • It models terrain, not weather: it doesn't predict cloud cover

Made for motorcyclists, hikers and landscape photographers who plan a sunset stop and don't want to find a mountain in the way.
