An up to date list of what I need in order to do my job.
What is f.lux?
Ever notice how people texting at night have that eerie blue glow?
Or wake up ready to write down the Next Great Idea, and get blinded by your computer screen?
During the day, computer screens look good—they're designed to look like the sun. But, at 9PM, 10PM, or 3AM, you probably shouldn't be looking at the sun.
f.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.
It's even possible that you're staying up too late because of your computer. You could use f.lux because it makes you sleep better, or you could just use it just because it makes your computer look better.
f.lux makes your computer screen look like the room you're in, all the time. When the sun sets, it makes your computer look like your indoor lights. In the morning, it makes things look like sunlight again.
Tell f.lux what kind of lighting you have, and where you live. Then forget about it. f.lux will do the rest, automatically.
f.lux also supports Philips Hue smart lighting system. Lightbulbs can be synced to your f.lux settings to create a surrounding environment that's more friendly to sleep.

Just an amazing tool for your eyes' health
This application makes my eyes sore and my vision gets blurry when the app comes into play in the evenings. I really don't understand the reason behind so pervasive praising of this program. Dammit, why not just manually adjust the brightness of the monitor at night or, even better, aim to use your computer only during daylight hours? Why would someone rely on some piece of software that's basically aimed to decide what's best for eyes without even knowing the model of the monitor or anything about its settings? And that expression from the description cracks me up: "During the day, computer screens look good—they're designed to look like the sun." Designed to look like the Sun you say? No sh*t. Last time I tried gazing at the unclouded Sun for more than a couple of seconds I felt like my eyes are going to die on me. I am sure as hell I haven't ever experienced anything similar with any of my bloody computer screens.
It's not for your eyes, it's for the hypothalamus. So the brain doesn't think it's morning because of the blue light emitted from the screen. We only have natural blue light in the morning and a warm light later in the day. It takes an hour extra to fall asleep after you see blue light than if you didn't. You can't change your settings to mimic natural lighting conditions every few minutes... If it bothers your eyes that much you might have a problem and should go get them looked at. I know it's an old post... but still...
There are lots of other more significant factors that define how fast one falls asleep (and the quality of sleep) than being exposed to some light before going to bed. For example if you've been up for 24+ hours straight, you will fall sleep no matter what, even if the sun is shining nicely through your window. Unless of course you have some serious sleep disorder, but flux aint gonna help there moreover.
I don't care for what exactly Flux is, but the eyes do take some toll most likely than not, because flux makes the picture less legible and harder to make out.

A customizable time-based blue light filter. The only feature I wish it had was a schedule based on the day of the week, as on weekends I stay up late and don't want the filter to activate.
broken on linux for several years
A wonderful program and will always be my favorite screen dimmer.
Windows 10 Night Light feature did not provide sufficiently warm color temperature. f.lux also surprised with a non intrusive reminder about my wake-up time.
It works great! It changes the colors of the screen during the day.
