What is Proton Docs?
Docs in Proton Drive are end-to-end encrypted so your work stays safe from data breaches, online surveillance, and can never be fed into AI models.
The most secure online document editor
Unlike services that scan your files, Proton Drive docs end-to-end encrypt every keystroke, image, table, even your file name. It’s a mathematical guarantee that only you and people you share with can access your data.
Create documents with guaranteed privacy
Your documents are a private place for your journals, brainstorming sessions, and notes that are just for you. Put your thoughts on paper with images, tables, comments, checklists, and more. It's all end-to-end encrypted.
Collaborate freely, knowing your work is private
You should be free to work on drafts without your data being collected, scanned, and abused for profit. Docs give you and your team a powerful and private platform to collaborate effectively.
Docs is part of Proton Drive
Our encrypted cloud storage service, Proton Drive, allows you to store, manage, and access your documents securely from one place. You can create new documents directly within Proton Drive, and they’ll be saved in the current Drive folder. You can then easily share them and manage permissions.

Comments and Reviews
This is one of those services that you really want to love using, but can do with a touch of improvement. I'm not going to be harsh as this has just been announced, so there are gonna be nuances and areas of improvement. Having said that, I am greatly impressed with the no-frills interface and that I can type using Markdown conventions to format the doc as I type. The other selling point is the end-to-end encryption. Oh yeah.
My usage of Docs has been on the desktop in a Windows environment. However, I was unable to create new documents on my Android device within the Proton Drive app. I also navigated to the mobile friendly site and there's no option to create a new file. So I think it's too soon to suggest it is supported on mobile, just yet.
Another nuance that I observe is with the upload of Markdown documents. It is supported, but when you open the file in Docs it gets converted to a Proton Doc (as a copy). As documents can be exported to the Markdown format, I'd like to see native Markdown file handing. I shall watch this space.
Also, within the Drive app on my Android device I cannot preview the documents. Though when I open the Markdown file it does come up as a plain text preview. So that's something. But with the conversion to a Proton Doc, I'm missing that link. Perhaps, I need to be patient and wait for an update for the mobile apps to make a proper judgement. For what it's worth, it is a great start which is just waiting to turn into a full suite to compete with Google Docs.
UPDATE: #1 Looks like I spoke a little too soon. I got an update for the Android app. Still no option to create a document, but now I am able to click on the existing docs, which will open a new browser tab to edit it. The Markdown file will still load as a plaintext file showing the formatting.
UPDATE #2: It's been a while, but I wanted to give an update after a little playing around. Proton Docs uses it's own format for doc editing. While you can upload other formats to Proton Drive, they will get converted when you try to edit them online. In addition to that, I also found that you can use Markdown conventions while editing and the formatting will adjust straightaway, which is a very nice touch.
It's not open source : You can't know how it works under the hood. I want to trust proton and their team, but they have a history of keeping systems proprietary, like a black box.
Usually they keep code proprietary during beta. Do you have other example ?
Of course, their VPN backend is closed-source. Same for the proton pass syncing service, it's a proprietary backend. A lot of their apps, as you mentioned, were proprietary during development. They also collect usage and crash data by default (opt-out), so I just want to wait for an open-source app. LibreOffice will suffice until they publish the code :I
It is very likely that the code is open, since the company Proton AG is now owned by the Proton Foundation (non-profit) https://proton.me/blog/proton-non-profit-foundation
If you manage to find the source code, I'll edit my comment to five stars.
Try it then you will understand
