It also has chat rooms which can be combined into groups (like Discords servers) and group voice calls. It's open source and can be hosted on an own server or used on one of many free servers.

Element is Good but it feels like a Half-baked Cake. Some features need tight gearing and I hope in 1-2 years this Platform will become the best FOSS Platform for Group Communication.

While the privacy and self-hosting features are nice, I don't see this becoming a wide-spread alternative to Discord, if only because it's overly complicated for what it is.

Voice features are just lacking too far behind or practically non existent compared to discord. No channels, no audio wizards setup or even basic settings like volume control or open mic threshold settings, no push to talk. It's very very barebones. If it were to have Mumbe's voice features instead of Jitsi's it would be a discord killer.

Can create communities and channels, and it's federated, so it's really like Discord where you can join any public community

FOSS, end-to-end encryption, beautiful interface, easy to set up, fast, responsive. Not bloated like Discord, not a privacy hazard like Discord. You can host your own server. Frequently updated. Supports gifs, videos, emoticons, etc. Clean sound.

Significantly safer than Discord. Much better text chat features, although lacking in the voice chat department.

Telegram is more akin to whatsapp than discord. Discord would be closer to mumble, teamspeak or ventrilo.

I like Guilded as an alternative because I feel like the developers are super friendly and active, and it seems to have a LOT of features that Discord sort of skips out on. The fact that I don't have to pay a subscription to the devs (and now you can only pay to the owner of your server - no Nitrolike option at all!) for the features is actually really great.

Its an upgraded Discord. The performance issues people have had in the past are actively being worked on if not already resolved.

    It Isn't Polished as much.

Discord Is really good in keeping the UI Clean, Modern and Polished. Guilded doesn't do that very well.

Found out about Guilded from others moving away from Discord and i'm so glad I checked it out before blindly defending Discord. It's superior in almost every way for free...

In short: Open Source Discord, with special care about privacy. It offers all the basic features + costumization options you only have on Discord with Nitro. Totally free, and has everything you need, so definitly try it out!

Design & Structure is very similar to that of discord, making users feel straight at home, more so than some of the other alternatives listed.

Role system is not as flexible as discord's as of yet, but boasts some features known from Nitro for free. Overall a very promising option for those concerned with Discord's TOS.

Awesome instant video meetings, but misplaced in this list as an "alternative", as this has absolutely no similarities to discord and doesn't serve the same use-case.
