What is Dictano?

Dictano is a dictation app for macOS that runs the speech recognition on the Mac itself. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and it works with the network off.

Press the hotkey, a small recording bar appears with a live audio meter, speak, and press it again. About a second later the text is typed straight into whatever app the cursor was in: an editor, a browser field, an email, a chat box. There is no window to copy from and no cleanup step. Holding the hotkey instead of tapping it works as push to talk.

Transcription uses Whisper large-v3-turbo, which handles full sentences, punctuation, technical terms and switching language mid-sentence. English, Spanish, German, Portuguese and French can be set explicitly or detected automatically. The last ten transcriptions are kept in the menu bar so a dictation can be copied again.

The app is a menu bar app written in Swift. The download is about 3 MB; the speech model, around 550 MB, is fetched once on first launch and stored locally. It requires an Apple Silicon Mac.

Pricing is a one-time license after a 7-day trial. There is no subscription.
