Character AI has one of the largest libraries of user-created personas I've ever seen — millions of characters across every fandom and scenario imaginable. The roleplay quality is genuinely impressive when it works. The AI can pick up on subtle context clues and stay in character during extended conversations, which is something a lot of competing apps still struggle with.

Cool and very interesting website where you can chat with many fictional characters using AI.
The most popular one, but after trying multiple other ones, it's one of the worst ones. The only reason I'm not giving 1 star is the sheer amount of user-generated characters.
The recent additions like voice calls, Imagine Animate, and c.ai Books show the team is actively innovating, and the free tier is generous enough to get a solid experience without paying.
That said, there are real pain points:
Memory consistency is still hit-or-miss. In longer sessions, characters sometimes forget key details — names, plot points, established facts — which really breaks immersion during roleplay.
The content filters have become noticeably more aggressive. I understand the safety reasoning, but they often trigger on perfectly benign creative writing scenarios. It can be frustrating when you're mid-story and the AI suddenly refuses to continue.
Ads in the free tier have gotten more intrusive. Full-screen ads interrupting a conversation flow is a rough experience.
No proactive engagement — the AI only responds when you initiate. For a "companion" app, it would feel more alive if it could check in on you or greet you unprompted.
Overall, Character AI is still the king of roleplay variety and character creation. But if you're looking for a more personal, companion-focused experience with better memory retention and fewer interruptions, it might be worth exploring some of the alternatives listed on this page.
Great for: casual roleplay, fandom characters, creative writing Less ideal for: deep emotional companionship, long-term memory, ad-free experience on free tier
After being acquired by a certain multi-billion dollar company soon after becoming public (can't remember which), the site really started to lose its mojo. The overall moderation in chats between users and characters has been alarmingly stringent (all in the name of keeping the site "family-friendly"), the characters sometimes forget to stay on topic and divert the conversation instead, and the overall response quality from the characters has been so-so. Another striking rumor I see is that your chats with characters are not private, as the staff can read them if they need to. At least all that was the case several months ago or so.
And I believe the more recent issues have been...
I honestly don't see a bright future for this service. :(
I'd love it if CAI became really family-friendly. But, in fact, the entire site is filled with thirst traps, which obviously affects the quality/direction of responses Seeing some weird stuff in my recommendations isn't cool either. But I agree that the platform has really degraded lately. For example, they deleted chat rooms.
