Buddy is a local-first desktop password manager that keeps your vault on your own computer. You don't need an account, and there's no subscription.
The vault is an SQLite database whose entries are encrypted with XChaCha20-Poly1305, using a key derived from your master password with Argon2. You unlock it with your master password, Touch ID on macOS, or Windows Hello on Windows.
The app goes online to activate a trial or license, to check for updates, and for a daily license check that is skipped silently when you're offline. Your vault never leaves your computer, and everything else works without a connection.
Every feature is free for 30 days. After that, a perpetual license costs $49, with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
Features:
- Logins, payment cards, addresses, SSH keys, notes and encrypted file attachments, kept in sections you can rename and extend
- Built-in TOTP codes, which you can add by capturing a QR code straight off your screen
- Password generator with random and passphrase modes
- Import from 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Proton Pass, LastPass, Keeper, Chrome, Firefox, Safari or any CSV, with the format detected automatically. Password-protected exports from Bitwarden, Dashlane and Proton Pass are read directly, so you never write your passwords to disk in plain text
- Scheduled local backups and a documented export format
- Browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that gets credentials from the desktop app over native messaging, so your browser never holds a copy of the vault
- Interface in 13 languages
The encryption core, the vault format spec and a standalone recovery tool are open source under Apache-2.0, and the browser extension is GPL-3.0. The desktop app is closed source.
Buddy is built for one person on their own computers. It has no mobile apps, automatic sync or shared vaults. To move a vault to another computer, you export it from one and import it on the other.
