OpenProject 17.8 expands previously introduced MCP server to create & manage work packages
OpenProject 17.8 is now available as the latest release of the open source project management software. The update extends the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server introduced in OpenProject 17.2, connecting AI assistants more directly with project work.
With the new release, the MCP server can create and update work packages. It can also add comments and manage relations between work packages. Those actions continue to respect the permissions and business rules configured in OpenProject.
Beyond the MCP server changes, work packages can now have multiple target versions. The release also adds global restrictions for time entries, giving administrators a system-wide control.
For project collaboration, OpenProject 17.8 includes further improvements to backlogs, wikis, and meetings. For Community Edition users, tables can now display work package relations, making relationship information available directly in tabular work package views.
