OpenAI launches Astra for Law with 230M source search and legal tool integrations

OpenAI has launched Astra for Law, a legal focused version of GPT-6 Astra for research, analysis and drafting. It combines the model with a dedicated legal search index covering more than 230 million URLs across U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, court rules and administrative decisions, with new sources added daily. Through the Free Law Project, it also includes CourtListener data covering more than 99.9% of published U.S. precedential case law.

In Vals AI's Legal Research Bench, Astra for Law passed the overall correctness check on 54% of questions, compared with 38.7% for GPT-6 Astra using web search alone. On case law questions, OpenAI says it found 24% more reference cases and retrieved up to 54% more relevant passages from the correct court opinions. The system can also apply client specific facts, develop arguments and deal terms, identify weaknesses in a case and assess how legal provisions affect risk.

The launch includes 26 partner built plugins for legal services such as iManage, Intapp, DeepJudge, Relativity and Clio. Thomson Reuters is adding HighQ matter context and previewing a CoCounsel Legal connector, while nine community plugins provide 47 customizable legal skills.

Astra for Law is initially available to selected U.S. firms through Trusted Access in ChatGPT and Codex, with Zero Data Retention available via API and ChatGPT Enterprise usage excluded from human review by default.
