Meta launches Muse, a personal AI agent designed to act on your behalf, not just answer

Meta has unveiled Muse, which the company describes as “the world's first personal AI agent built for everyone”. Unlike conventional chatbots, Muse is designed not merely to answer questions but to take action, completing tasks and projects, converting long-term goals into action plans, and making unprompted suggestions based on what it learns about a person. According to Meta's announcement, the agent is powered by Muse Spark, the company's most capable model to date, and can work across the apps people use daily, remembering details mentioned only once and adapting over time. The company frames the release as a first step toward what it calls “personal superintelligence”, which it believes will be “one of the most transformative technologies of a lifetime”.

Privacy and security feature prominently in Meta's pitch. Rather than running on standard infrastructure, Muse operates on what the company calls Muse Secure VM, a dedicated virtual machine with its own browser that houses both the agent and the user's data, protections Meta says no other agent currently provides. Users control how much access Muse receives. Later this year, Meta plans to introduce Muse Confidential VM, in which the entire environment, including data and conversations, would be encrypted with a key held only by the user, meaning even Meta could not access it.

Muse is rolling out in the United States on iOS, Android, and the web, with support for AI glasses coming soon. Interacting with it is designed to feel like messaging another person, whether through a dedicated app or directly within WhatsApp. On the commerce side, Muse can check out using Link built by Stripe, generating one-time-use cards so real card details stay hidden, and becomes the first AI agent covered by Link's purchase protections, including price-drop coverage and a return guarantee. Shop Pay and 1Password integration are on the roadmap. The service is free for most core uses, with subscription plans at $20 and $100 per month available for heavier users.
