GnuCash 5.17 enhances charting tools, tooltips, stock lot tracking and fixes critical bugs
The GnuCash development team has officially released version 5.17, marking the seventeenth installment in the stable 5.x series. This update focuses primarily on refinements and bug fixes rather than major feature additions. Notable corrections address several longstanding issues, including a print queue problem that prevented multiple checks from being sent after the first one, reconciliation errors for transactions posted after the reconcile date, and a crash affecting the Mortgage and Loan Repayment Assistant under the C.UTF-8 locale. These fixes aim to improve stability for users who rely on the open-source accounting software for day-to-day financial management.
Beyond critical patches, version 5.17 brings meaningful enhancements to data visualization and reporting tools. The release introduces improved chart tooltips with better readability and adds global preferences for marker styles, sizes, engagement radius, and pointer positioning. Users can now configure whether tooltips display individual points or all points on a specific date, and even opt to show only non-zero values. Additional improvements span multicolumn reports, CSV import handling for files with special characters, and stock lot tracking that properly accounts for split transactions when calculating capital gains.
The update also marks the deprecation of two functions, GncPrice.set_source_string in Python and gnc-price-set-source-string in Guile, which will be fully removed in GnuCash 6.0. Developers are advised to migrate to the newer set_source function that accepts an enum instead. With updated translations across 14 languages and continued support for Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms, GnuCash 5.17 represents another incremental step forward for this community-driven finance application that has served accountants and small business owners for decades.
