Cap launches v0.6 with a rebuilt video editor, 3D scenes and a native desktop app

Cap v0.6 is Cap’s largest release to date, expanding the app beyond screen recording with a rebuilt editor and more complete video editing tools. The release introduces a redesigned timeline, crop tool, inspector, dedicated text and 3D panels, and a picker for adding new layers. Timeline updates include ruler scrubbing, a minimap, cut snapping, zoom multi-select, and playback following. Users can also record directly into an existing project, with new clips added automatically, while the export screen now estimates file size and duration based on the actual project.

Every recording now includes a 3D track with automatic camera scenes, perspective effects, and manual controls for positioning and moving the virtual camera. Other editing additions include animated text layers, full-screen title cards that pause the underlying footage, moving gradient backgrounds, image tracks, device and browser frames, cursor styles, and style changes that can be applied to specific sections of a video.

Cap is also previewing an experimental native desktop app written in Rust using the GPU-backed GPUI framework. In Cap’s same-machine benchmark, playback CPU usage dropped from 76.6% to 17.5%, while memory usage fell from 3,724 MiB to 440 MiB. The preview is available under Settings Experimental, carries over existing recordings and settings, and currently lacks some features available in the classic app.
