RustDesk brings true unattended remote access to Wayland, including multi-monitor setups
RustDesk has reached a key milestone for Linux remote administration, now enabling true unattended remote access on Wayland. This advance allows users to connect seamlessly to their systems, even in cases with multiple monitors, something that has been a significant challenge for current open source and commercial offerings.
Unlike previous alternatives, RustDesk’s new preview build supports unattended logins from the remote machine’s login screen and following reboots. This improvement removes the need for someone to manually approve every incoming session, making it viable for server and workstation maintenance where no local intervention is possible.
Currently, this capability is provided as a preview build specifically for x86_64 Debian and Ubuntu systems. While Windows and X.Org environments have enjoyed more robust support in other remote desktop solutions, major contenders like AnyDesk still require X.Org for incoming Linux sessions and TeamViewer marks their Wayland support as experimental.
Following this limited preview, RustDesk aims to gather feedback, particularly from Wayland users with multi-monitor arrangements. The team plans to use these insights to expand release compatibility to more distributions, such as Fedora and Arch Linux, and fully integrate unattended Wayland access in standard RustDesk builds once stability is confirmed.
