OpenAI launches new ChatGPT for Teens mode with stricter safety controls & study features
OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a new dedicated mode for users aged 13 to 17 that applies automatically to those who report their age or are identified as under 18 by OpenAI’s age prediction system. The launch builds on safety measures announced last year, including work on automatically identifying teen users following a lawsuit over the death of 16 year old Adam Raine. The new experience adds stricter protections around self harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and explicit content, while also preventing ChatGPT from using romantic language or encouraging emotional dependence with teens.
Alongside the stricter safety measures, the new mode puts a strong focus on learning and education, with features such as Study Mode, quizzes, and Learning Visualizations built into the teen experience. A new Responsible Homework Reminder can detect when students appear to be using ChatGPT simply to complete assignments and redirect them to Study Mode for step by step guidance. Teens and parents can also set Study Hours, during which Study Mode is enabled by default and ChatGPT avoids giving direct answers.
Other additions include break reminders, warnings before uploading potentially sensitive images, and teen specific onboarding. Parent linked accounts retain controls such as Quiet Hours and selected settings, while parents can receive limited notifications in high risk situations, now including cases related to eating disorders.
