LibreOffice 26.8 released with new paragraph composer & variable font support; still no AI

The Document Foundation has officially released LibreOffice 26.8, marking the latest major iteration of the popular open-source office suite. The release, developed over eight months beginning in December 2025, represents the collaborative efforts of 206 contributors. Available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, this new version prioritizes professional-grade typography and multilingual text support while deliberately steering clear of artificial intelligence integration, a stance that distinguishes it from many competing productivity suites.

The headline feature in 26.8 is the paragraph composer, a new text layout algorithm that balances word spacing across entire paragraphs rather than processing line-by-line, delivering more polished document appearance akin to commercial publishing software. The update also introduces native support for OpenType font variations, deeper right-to-left and complex script handling, including automatic paragraph direction detection and bidirectional character display, and enhanced Arabic language support. Additional capabilities include Calculated Fields in Calc pivot tables, round-trip preservation of Microsoft Office chart types stored in OOXML format, and the ability to mix multiple page sizes within single Impress and Draw documents alongside newly introduced presentation sections in Impress.

Notably absent from this release are any AI-powered features, a deliberate choice highlighted prominently in the official announcement.
