OpenProject 17.5 offers project-based work package identifiers and more flexible backlogs
OpenProject 17.5 introduces the option for project-based work package identifiers, marking a major shift from a single global numeric sequence. Organizations now have the flexibility to use semantic IDs, such as X-01, which immediately indicate the related project. This feature aids teams managing multiple projects, enhances referencing and sharing of work packages, and lays groundwork for smoother Jira migrations by preserving existing issue identifiers.
Following these core updates, agile teams benefit from expanded customization in backlog management. Administrators can now exclude specific work package types from backlogs, focusing refinement and sprint planning on the most relevant tasks. Sprint views and work package cards have also received a redesign, offering better visibility and clearer context for agile planning activities.
As part of this release, OpenProject gains more natural work package references and improves scheduling flexibility through enhanced recurring meeting options. These updates together provide organizations with increased control, clarity, and usability across project management workflows.
