Bluesky is getting Reddit-inspired communities built for topic-focused discussions

Bluesky is set to introduce a “communities” feature this year, giving users focused spaces for deeper discussion around specific topics. Built on the decentralized AT Protocol, communities will let users create and join groups, post content, receive updates, and access each community through a handle that also works as a URL. Those links will lead to custom community homepages.

Communities will support three privacy levels: public, invite-only, and private. Each one will also have its own dedicated feed, while builders will be able to create custom experiences for community URLs beyond the standard Bluesky interface, using tools from the wider AT Protocol ecosystem.

The feature will not be limited to the main Bluesky app, as communities are designed to exist openly on the web and connect with other AT Protocol apps. The company has increasingly emphasized smaller, interest-based spaces alongside its main public feed, with company leaders pointing to Reddit as a source of inspiration.
