Wine 11.8 improves keyboard layout support, MSXML reimplementation, VBScript & Mono engine

Wine 11.8 is now available, furthering its role as a compatibility layer for running Windows applications on Linux, macOS, and BSD. This latest release updates the built-in Mono engine to version 11.1.0, which is crucial for users who rely on .NET-based software within Wine-based environments.

Alongside the engine upgrade, this release continues the MSXML reimplementation, advancing efforts to phase out reliance on the libxml2 library. These refinements improve Wine's independence and long-term maintainability. Additionally, keyboard layout handling has been enhanced through the use of XKBRegistry. This adjustment benefits users who operate with diverse or non-standard keyboard configurations, improving input accuracy across supported platforms.

Following ongoing scripting compatibility efforts, this version delivers further improvements for running VBScript, aiding broader compatibility with Windows automation and scripting tasks. Critical to the release, Wine 11.8 delivers 22 bug fixes targeting a mix of widely used software and games, such as Microsoft Golf 99, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Lockdown, Hoot Sound Hardware Emulator, Altium Designer 18, Visio 2013, Assassin's Creed Shadows, Petka, ExamDiffPro, Enigma Virtual Box, and many others.
