OpenAI brings Codex to ChatGPT mobile app for remote coding project access

OpenAI has integrated Codex into the ChatGPT mobile app for iOS and Android, giving users a way to review and manage Codex projects from their phones. The feature is rolling out in preview for all ChatGPT plans, including Free, Go, and paid tiers.

It's worth noting that the mobile app is not really meant for coding directly on a phone though, instead, it works as a remote control for Codex running on a trusted machine, such as a Mac mini, a personal computer, or a company managed workspace. Files, credentials, permissions, and local setups stay on that machine, while the phone receives updates like screenshots, terminal output, code diffs, test results, and approval requests.

Users can prompt Codex from mobile, review outputs, approve commands, change models, manage threads, and start new coding sessions while away from their computer. OpenAI says the system uses a secure relay layer to keep linked machines accessible without exposing them to the public internet, with Windows app support expected soon.
