OpenAI will merge ChatGPT and Codex usage allowances starting in December
OpenAI will begin sharing a single usage allowance across ChatGPT and Codex for subscribers on its Plus, Pro, and Business tiers starting in December, according to an announcement from the company. The change accompanies a broader integration effort that brings the agentic capabilities of Work into the main ChatGPT experience. Under the new system, usage will be measured in tokens, the units of information a model processes and generates, rather than by separate quotas per product.
How quickly a subscriber burns through that shared allowance will vary. According to the announcement, consumption depends on both the model selected and the nature of the task, with more advanced models and more complex requests drawing more heavily on the pool. Notably, instant chat will not count against the allowance at all. OpenAI said it expects most users will not need to wait for their usage to reset more frequently than they do today, framing the rollout as a careful transition intended to limit disruption to existing workflows.
Subscribers will be able to monitor their combined remaining usage and reset times through the settings. For those who exhaust their allowance, the company outlined three options: waiting for the reset period, upgrading to a higher-tier plan, or purchasing credits to continue accessing eligible features.
