Bungie announces the end of Destiny 2 content updates as major layoffs threaten the studio
The iconic studio behind the original Halo games, Bungie, has announced that Destiny 2, likely its flagship game for nearly the last decade, will receive its final live service content update on June 9. The game will remain online and playable, but ongoing content development is ending, with no future major expansions currently planned, which, given its nature as a live service title, essentially means the death of the game after nearly 10 years of active support. Bungie says the June 9 update will include additions and improvements across multiple activity types, including some content originally intended for later releases.
The final update will still include some additions and improvements, including Pantheon 2.0, updated raid and dungeon rewards, new Crucible modes, and the permanent return of Sparrow Racing League, but the bigger story is Bungie itself. The studio is now moving away from Destiny 2 while reportedly having no immediate Destiny 3 production plans and no newly approved projects ready to replace it, which, given the current state of the industry, can't really mean anything good for the iconic studio.
Some Destiny staff have already been reassigned to Marathon, Bungie’s latest extraction shooter, which has reportedly fallen short of sales expectations. The studio, now owned by Sony, is also reportedly preparing significant layoffs after Destiny 2’s final update. With Destiny 2 winding down, Marathon under pressure, and no clear next major project confirmed, the situation raises bigger questions about Bungie’s future inside Sony and the studio’s long term stability.
