Trisquel 12.0 “Ecne” launches with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base, APT 3.0, and new browser options
Trisquel 12.0 “Ecne” marks a new release for users seeking a Linux system built entirely from free software, intentionally excluding proprietary drivers, firmware, and non-free components. The distribution now uses Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as its long-term support foundation and is powered by the GNU Linux-libre 6.8 kernel, advancing both stability and the project's commitment to free software principles.
Building on these changes, Trisquel 12.0 transitions to APT 3.0, supporting the deb822 repository format across all installation paths and modernizing package management. Installation reliability also improves, as modular kernel changes reduce breakage in installer udeb components. The team continues work on kernel-wedge and has revised numerous AppArmor rules for graphical environments, increasing security coverage for everyday desktop use.
For web browsing, users now have fully free choices with the addition of GNU IceCat and ungoogled-chromium, alongside the actively maintained Abrowser. Following these updates, the backports' repository keeps popular applications like LibreOffice, Inkscape, Nextcloud Desktop, Kdenlive, yt-dlp, O.A.D., Tuba, fastfetch, and others up to date.
Trisquel 12.0 remains available in multiple desktop flavors, including MATE 1.26.1, KDE 5.27, LXDE 0.99.2, and others, providing alternatives for a diverse user base.
