OpenProject 17.3 adds dedicated sprint objects, auto sprint board creation, and much more

OpenProject 17.3 brings a major boost for agile teams with the introduction of dedicated sprint objects. Users can now organize work natively using sprints within the Backlogs module, eliminating the need for manual setup or workarounds. Building on this, a dedicated sprint board is automatically created when each sprint begins. The board is pre-configured to reflect the project's workflows and includes every work package assigned to the sprint, streamlining task tracking and coordination.

Following these agile workflow improvements, OpenProject 17.3 enables teams to complete active sprints directly. When a sprint is closed, the system guides users in managing any unfinished work packages in bulk, such as returning them to the backlog or assigning them to a future sprint. Additionally, the Backlogs module now displays all work package types within a project by default. This ensures that teams can prioritize and manage every task or issue during both backlog and sprint planning.

All action board types, including Kanban and parent-child boards, are now unlocked for the community edition with this release. This extends board functionality to non-enterprise users, allowing a broader range of workflows and team structures to be supported.
