Odysee plans feature to play any YouTube video directly inside its app soon without ads
The popular open-source video hosting platform and YouTube alternative Odysee has announced plans to launch a feature that would let users watch any YouTube video directly inside Odysee. The company is framing it as an option for people fed up with unskippable YouTube ads, and says creators would still keep their YouTube ad earnings.
The announcement spread quickly on X and drew a mixed response. Some people liked the idea of watching YouTube videos without the bloated experience with Shorts and AI-stuff, while others questioned what the real advantage is and said it still feels like YouTube with an extra layer.
One of the main concerns was whether this could raise legal issues, since it involves making YouTube videos playable inside a third party platform, although it is not necessarily that different from what other YouTube clients like NewPipe or FreeTube already do. Odysee has not shared how it will work yet, and there is still no release date.

But again with the lack of moderation and problematic content!
Yes, it absolutely helps that Odysee will allow for watching
YouTube videos without ads, essentially serving as a third-party client. However, with the doxxing, questionable privacy practices, and the many MANY comments and criticisms on the hate speech, misinformation, and GOD KNOWS WHAT posted (I bet you already know what I'm talking about...), this definitely has me in a bind. Like it or not, that's gonna turn at least some freedom-seekers away, despite the low levels of censorship that the decentralized platform enforces. (Yes... even they have standards.) Can the platform be taken seriously when it's able to host all... this?
I'm also concerned about how the people behind the second-most-visited website (that's
YouTube for you!) are gonna combat this fix. Considering its three-year history of fighting back against ad-blocking users, I don't suppose it'll take things lightly. It's already begun to take a bite out of those trying to sneak a peek at videos' descriptions and comments as of recent. Who knows what petty evil from Google comes-a-brewin' afterward at this point.
...does Google even know about Odysee? :/
No mention of Futo Grayjay? No ads, sponsorblock option built in, can be used offline too if you downloaded the videos beforehand plus supports watching videos from other platforms like Odessee, Rumble, etc. Odessee appears to want to be a competitor, it will be interesting to see how Odessee people do it.
Interesting, wasn’t really aware of the full features from Grayjay. Will give it a try and probably a shout out in our social networks in a few days 🙂
