PhotoPrism introduces PostgreSQL support, MCP integration, and enhanced 3D earth view

PhotoPrism has rolled out a significant update focused on expanding its technical infrastructure and improving user experience across the board. The most notable addition is experimental PostgreSQL support alongside an upgraded database layer, marking a step forward for users seeking enterprise-grade database options. The GORM library saw substantial updates, moving from version 1.9.16 to 1.31.2, which should provide better stability and performance for photo library operations.

On the user-facing side, the update introduces an AI-friendly framework allowing assistants and applications to connect via OAuth and leverage new MCP tools for library search and browsing, complete with account permission controls. Photo viewers now benefit from an export dialog enabling selective downloads at chosen resolutions and formats, while the places feature received a visual overhaul with enhanced 3D earth views featuring atmospheric effects and starry backgrounds. Behind the scenes, security received attention with 23 GHSA fixes through libheif updates and 11 CVE patches in the Go runtime upgrade.

The release also addresses numerous metadata handling bugs, including timezone adjustments for Pacific Ocean locations and consistency fixes across Exif, XMP, and ExifTool formats. With these improvements, PhotoPrism continues positioning itself as a robust self-hosted photo management solution that balances cutting-edge AI capabilities with traditional privacy-focused infrastructure.

Another great open source European alternative in the photos - AI management space that shapes up nicely. If they just could host the photos as well.
