Instagram launches Edits app on macOS with multi-tracks, 4K export, LUTs, and MCP support
Meta has announced the launch of Edits for desktop, bringing its free video editing app to macOS just over a year after the tool first debuted on mobile. According to Brett Westervelt, who leads the Edits app, the platform has already reached 50 million users. The new desktop version is designed for larger, more involved projects where a bigger screen and the precision of a mouse and keyboard matter most, addressing what the company describes as a familiar pain point for creators juggling a dozen clips on a phone screen.
The desktop editor arrives with a suite of professional-grade features, including a full multi-track timeline, keyframing for dynamic transitions, precise audio waveforms for beat-accurate cuts, and color grading tools such as color wheels, log conversions, and curves. Users can also import their own LUTs and font files to match their brand style, and in a notable nod to emerging workflows, AI agents can be connected to the editor through MCP (Model Context Protocol) to assist with projects. As on mobile, the app includes Instagram's licensed and royalty-free audio libraries, hundreds of sound and video effects, and unlimited automatic captions in multiple languages.
To ease the transition between devices, audio and text styles saved on mobile carry over to the desktop version, and users can configure custom keyboard shortcuts, including ones imported from other editors. Finished videos can be published directly to Instagram or exported elsewhere.
