Tor Browser 16.0 arrives with native support for Linux on ARM and generic window titles

The Tor Project has released Tor Browser 16.0, marking a significant milestone in the privacy-focused browser's evolution. The new version builds upon Firefox ESR 153.4, incorporating critical security patches that address vulnerabilities which could potentially expose users to exploits through malicious web content. Alongside the Firefox updates, the release ships with updated core components including Tor 0.4.9.13, NoScript 13.6.34, and OpenSSL 3.5.9, strengthening the browser's layered defense architecture for users seeking anonymous browsing experiences.

Among the most notable changes in this release are four major enhancements. First, Tor Browser 16.0 now offers native support for Linux on ARM processors (AArch64), enabling users with Raspberry Pi devices and Apple Silicon Macs running Linux to access the stable release channel rather than relying on alpha builds. Second, the settings' interface has undergone a complete redesign, adopting Mozilla's new about:preferences design language with all Tor-specific settings migrated over. Third, users can now enable generic window titles, a fingerprinting protection feature that replaces page-specific window names with simply “Tor Browser”, found under the privacy and security settings. Fourth, after a year of testing, a redesigned built-in user manual is now integrated directly into the browser, accessible via about:manual or through “Learn more” links throughout the UI.

On Android, the release introduces completely rewritten connection screens with a native implementation, representing an important foundation for future Connection Assist functionality that will help circumvent censorship automatically. The Android codebase has been streamlined, with tracker libraries reduced to just Mozilla Telemetry (which is disabled at runtime). Looking ahead, the Tor Project continues developing Connection Assist for Android while planning additional refinements to bridge selection and connection reliability. As always, users requiring maximum security and dependability should remain on the stable release channel rather than experimental alpha versions.
