The Browser Company confirms Arc browser sunset, directs users to AI-powered successor Dia

The Browser Company has officially announced the discontinuation of its acclaimed Arc browser, setting a December 22, 2026, shutdown date after more than four years of operation. The decision, confirmed via the company's website and social channels, marks the end of the innovative productivity browser known for its reimagined tab management and spatial organization features. The wind-down follows a May 2025 announcement in which the company revealed it would halt new feature development for Arc to concentrate resources on Dia, its artificial intelligence-focused successor.

The shutdown will unfold in three distinct phases. Effective immediately, new Arc account creation has been disabled. On November 23, the mobile versions of Arc Search for iOS and Android will lose AI capabilities including “Browse for Me”, along with sign-in and tab synchronization functionality. Finally, on December 22, the desktop applications on macOS and Windows will cease functioning entirely, user accounts will be deactivated, and personal data will be purged within 30 days. The company cites escalating security maintenance requirements in the AI era as the primary motivation, stating that “keeping a browser secure takes constant, dedicated work that is only increasing in the age of AI”. Dia, launched in beta in summer 2026, is positioned as the replacement; built from scratch to meet modern security standards, with SOC 2 certification and weekly security updates. Existing Arc users can migrate their bookmarks, extensions, passwords, history, spaces, and tab groups directly to Dia. The announcement comes less than a year after The Browser Company was acquired by Atlassian in September 2025.

Note to myself: Building a business around a single product that is a free browser is not a good idea. Note to myself #2: Building a business around a single product that is a $10-$100/month AI browser may not be a better idea.

Interesting, this article was posted 9 hours ago and it still hasn't made its way on the Tech News. It's kinda turning into a habit to see news in places like the home page before they appear in the right part of the site
