Spotify introduces paid podcast memberships across 34 markets to compete with Patreon

Spotify is expanding its creator monetization toolkit with a new memberships feature, officially rolling out across 34 markets including the U.S., U.K., Germany, Australia, and Canada. The program allows eligible podcast creators to offer exclusive content directly to their most dedicated fans, ranging from bonus episodes and early access to behind-the-scenes material and special community perks.

Designed to help creators build sustainable businesses, memberships introduce a recurring revenue stream where creators retain 90% of generated income, joining existing options like advertising, sponsorships, and the Spotify Partner Program. The barrier to entry is intentionally low: shows need only three published episodes, 100 listeners or viewers, and 100 consumption hours within the past 30 days to qualify.

Because the feature lives natively within Spotify's ecosystem, creators can promote memberships to listeners already engaged with their content, supported by built-in analytics, targeted promotions, and free trial options. Importantly, creators also gain access to exportable member data, including contact information from fans who opt to share it, enabling stronger audience relationships both on and off the platform.
