scrcpy 5.0 adds hardware decoding & improved video buffering for Android screen mirroring

Genymobile has released scrcpy 5.0, marking the most significant performance update to the popular open-source Android screen mirroring tool since version 4.1. The headline feature is hardware-accelerated video decoding, which shifts the computational burden from the CPU to the computer's GPU whenever possible. According to the release notes, this change delivers dramatically improved performance: decoding speeds increase substantially while CPU usage drops by approximately 10 times, resulting in noticeably lower power consumption, particularly beneficial for laptop users running extended mirroring sessions.

Beyond the headline feature, scrcpy 5.0 introduces several technical refinements aimed at stability and cross-platform compatibility. Audio capture sees meaningful enhancement, now capturing all audio usages in audio playback capture mode for more comprehensive sound recording. Build infrastructure has been modernized with Windows ARM64 releases finally available, opening the door for native deployment on newer hardware architectures. The project also includes updated dependencies: platform-tools (adb) upgraded to version 37.0.1, FFmpeg to 9.0.2, SDL to 3.4.18, and dav1d to 1.5.4, ensuring the latest security patches and codec improvements.

Additional quality-of-life improvements round out the release. Video buffering has been enhanced for smoother streaming experiences, while ANDROID_SERIAL is now properly utilized in OTG mode for better device connectivity management. Technical refinements include mipmap generation for all YV12 planes and elimination of spurious “camera capture failed” warnings when stopping sessions. These cumulative enhancements reflect the maturation of scrcpy as a production-ready tool for professionals and enthusiasts alike who rely on reliable Android screen mirroring in their daily workflows.
