React Native 0.88 brings web-based event dispatching & variable fonts; no breaking changes
React Native 0.88 has officially been released, marking the third consecutive version since 0.83 to ship without user-facing breaking changes, a milestone that underscores the framework's ongoing commitment to upgrade stability. The headline feature is web-based event dispatching, which replaces the plugin-based system the renderer has relied on since its early days. By routing events through the standard W3C EventTarget API, this represents the largest runtime change in the release and becomes possible following the React 19.3.0 sync integrated into this version.
Beyond the foundational event system overhaul, developers gain variable font support via fontVariationSettings, SceneDelegate lifecycle hooks for iOS apps, and ArrayBuffer integration for Java TurboModules. For iOS developers, experimental Swift Package Manager support lands alongside improved asset catalog handling and codegen refinements that no longer crawl node_modules or follow symlinks when discovering components. On Android, the default User-Agent header now includes app name and version information, while androidx.collection updates to version 1.4.4 address view registry issues in the SurfaceMountingManager.
The release also upgrades core dependencies, including Metro bundler moving to version 0.87 (with a minimum requirement of 0.87.1) and Hermes engine advancing to build 260318099.0.4. While some deprecations were introduced, notably the InputAccessoryView component on iOS and prefixed background style properties, the team emphasized that migration paths remain straightforward. Expo users can expect React Native 0.88 to arrive as part of Expo SDK 58. As the ecosystem matures, this latest version reinforces React Native's trajectory toward predictability and web specification alignment.
