KDE Plasma 6.8 launches on community's 30th birthday, retiring X11 in favor of Wayland

The KDE community celebrated a landmark occasion with the release of KDE Plasma 6.8, marking three decades since its founding. The latest iteration of the popular Linux desktop environment delivers both immediate user-facing improvements and foundational changes designed to guide the platform forward. Among the most significant shifts is the retirement of X11 session support after 42 years of faithful service, signaling Plasma's full transition to the Wayland display protocol. Legacy applications requiring X11 will continue functioning through the XWayland compatibility layer, while native KDE applications will maintain X11 support for the foreseeable future.

New features prioritize accessibility and cross-cultural usability. A built-in “dwell clicker” allows users with mobility challenges to trigger clicks by pausing the cursor, eliminating the need for external tools. Internationalization efforts expanded with Bikram Sambat calendar support and Amharic language integration for the on-screen keyboard. Remote desktop capabilities received substantial polish, including bidirectional clipboard sync, exclusive mode for virtual screen matching, and adaptive performance tuning for unstable networks. Screen sharing gained flexibility with custom resolution options for virtual displays beyond the previous 1920×1080 limit, while Spectacle can now capture both system audio and microphone input simultaneously.

Under the hood, Plasma 6.8 introduces the beta version of the Union theming system, enabling consistent styling across both Qt Quick and traditional Qt Widgets applications like Dolphin, Kate, and Konsole. Performance optimizations reduce memory usage and improve load times, while KWin now employs triple buffering for NVIDIA GPUs by default. HDR support has been enhanced through ICC profile integration and HLG transfer function compatibility. Though Union theming isn't yet the default, its inclusion brings KDE closer to a unified styling architecture capable of serving the project's next thirty years.

The king (X11) is dead, long live the king (Wayland). But seriously, Wayland is the future on Linux, as is more secure and private than X11. Here are some resons why dropping X11 is the right thing: https://community.kde.org/Plasma/X11_Known_Significant_Issues
