Apple and Google partner to power Siri with Gemini AI models and Google Cloud technology
Apple and Google have entered a multi-year partnership that will bring Google's Gemini artificial intelligence models and cloud technology to power the next generation of Apple Foundation Models. This collaboration will enable upcoming Apple Intelligence features, most notably a more personalized version of Siri set to launch this year.
Through this agreement, Apple will leverage Google's cloud infrastructure and AI expertise to create a more advanced Siri. Apple's virtual assistant will directly benefit from integration with Google's Gemini models, which are built to advance artificial intelligence capabilities in consumer products. While many of these enhancements involve Google's technology, Apple maintains that user privacy will remain a priority, with AI requests continuing to be processed on Apple devices and through its Private Cloud Compute system.
Following the announcement, industry sources indicate that Apple may pay approximately $1 billion annually for access to the Gemini AI platform. This substantial investment aligns with Apple's broader effort to boost its artificial intelligence offerings, an area where it has recently lagged behind major players such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

Clearly, this is an admission by Apple that its current AI isn’t up to the level of the leading players. Even for Apple, one billion dollars per year is a lot of money
