Mullvad VPN adds QUIC obfuscation for WireGuard to bypass censorship
Mullvad VPN has introduced QUIC obfuscation for WireGuard to help users bypass firewalls and network censorship. The feature is available on all desktop platforms starting with version 2025.9 of the Mullvad app, with Android and iOS support planned for future releases.
QUIC obfuscation works by tunneling WireGuard traffic through HTTP, making it resemble standard web activity and harder for firewalls to detect or block without affecting normal internet use. This update is aimed at regions and networks where WireGuard or Mullvad’s other obfuscation methods face restrictions. By default, the desktop app will try QUIC after failed connection attempts, while users can also enable it permanently through the settings menu or command line.
The implementation is based on the MASQUE protocol (RFC 9298), which proxies UDP traffic through HTTP, and uses QUIC, the UDP-based transport protocol behind HTTP/3. Mullvad states that the feature enhances connection reliability and strengthens resistance to censorship.
