LibreOffice 25.8 launches with PDF 2.0 export, AES-256 encryption and PDF/A-4 support

LibreOffice 25.8 has been launched with notable cross-platform performance improvements, including faster startup, file opening, scrolling, and rendering. LibreOffice - Writer and LibreOffice - Calc launch documents up to 30% quicker, and memory management upgrades improve performance in virtual machines, remote desktops, and thin clients.

PDF export now supports PDF 2.0 with AES-256 encryption and PDF/A-4 standards. The export interface has been streamlined with a unified dropdown, merged Forms section, new structure elements, and improved handling of embedded files and hybrid ODF documents. It also allows importing encrypted hybrid PDFs, uses a single-signature requirement, and ensures better Adobe Acrobat Reader compatibility.

Writer users gain overhauled hyphenation and spacing controls, including word spacing justification and layout options for pages, columns, and document spreads. Additional features cover reinstating tracked changes, automatic image redaction, and double-click object rotation. Calc adds 14 new spreadsheet functions focused on array and text operations, plus context menu AutoFilter clearing, flexible conditional formatting, and an updated CSV import dialog. Across the suite, OLE objects resize proportionally, LibreOffice - Impress supports embedded PPTX fonts and Master Slide copying, and LibreOffice - Draw introduces visible page margin boundaries.

PDF 2.0 published in 2017 with improved security mandates 256-bit AES encryption as the default. PDF/A-4 published in November 2020 is based on PDF 2.0. This standard aims to preserve the static visual appearance of page-oriented documents over time. Faster startup and load.. All of this is Good news!
