Claude’s learning mode is now available to all users with new coding styles
Anthropic is expanding Claude “learning mode” feature, previously limited to Claude for Education since April 2025, to all users. The mode changes Claude’s interaction style by guiding users toward their own solutions using a Socratic approach, and can be enabled or disabled at any time from the style dropdown menu.
Alongside this, Claude Code introduces two new output styles: Explanatory and Learning. These are accessible through the /output-styles command after updating to the latest version. Explanatory mode provides step-by-step reasoning, explanations of trade-offs, architectural decisions, and best practices throughout the coding process. Learning mode functions like pair programming, inserting #TODO comments and asking users to complete short code segments.
These features aim to help students and developers build practical skills, while also allowing developers to create custom modes through the new Output Styles system. Education lead Drew Bent said Anthropic hopes to encourage similar AI learning tools and plans to expand learning mode further.
