TikTok plans new U.S. app amid sale talks and regulatory deadlines
TikTok is preparing a new version of its app designed specifically for users in the United States as the company navigates ongoing negotiations regarding its ownership. The new app, currently in development, aligns with plans for a sale to a group of investors. According to reports, TikTok targets September 5 for the launch of this U.S. specific version. Meanwhile, the present iteration of the app is expected to stop operating in March of the following year.
To maintain access to TikTok, U.S. users will be required to download the new app once it becomes available. While these plans are in motion, both the rollout date and shutdown of the existing app may be revised as circumstances evolve. This uncertainty is further underscored by the U.S. government's ongoing regulatory actions, including three previous extensions of the TikTok ban deadline, with the most recent shifting the cutoff to September 17.
These updates come shortly after President Trump indicated that a near-final agreement for TikTok’s sale had been reached, and as U.S. officials prepare to enter formal discussions with representatives from China regarding the proposed deal.
