Microsoft is shutting down the Movies & TV app store on Xbox and Windows PCs
Microsoft has shutdown its Movies & TV store for both Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, halting all new movie and TV show purchases in the Microsoft Store. While this abrupt shutdown affects users’ ability to buy new titles, previously purchased films and TV shows remain accessible through Microsoft’s Movies & TV app on Xbox and Windows. However, content must be played within this app, except for titles eligible under Movies Anywhere in the United States.
Users can still download previously purchased videos on Windows, though only in high-definition quality. Microsoft is not offering refunds for any movies or TV shows bought before the store's closure. Content remains accessible only through the Movies & TV app on Xbox or Windows, and users now rely on Microsoft to maintain backend support to ensure continued access. The company has stated it will continue providing technical and access-related support for owned titles.
The move has sparked concerns similar to those seen when Microsoft discontinued Groove Music Pass in 2017. It also marks the end of Microsoft’s nearly 20-year run in digital video sales, which began with the Zune Marketplace in 2006, evolved into Xbox Video in 2012, and later became the Movies & TV app in 2015.

This is why I always keep 4k on my own harddrive, and really download any ebook or video I purchase. I don't care about the rules, I'm not distributing it.
It's even worse with Amazon Kindle. If they ban your account, you lose all your books if you don't download them yourself.
Oh but it gets even worse on Kindle, now that it’s no longer even possible to back up your own purchased books outside Amazon 😬: Amazon will remove the option to download/transfer Kindle e-books via USB by February 2025
