7-Zip v25 adds faster compression, enhanced CPU support, & improved legacy format handling
7-Zip version 25 brings notable improvements in compression speed and hardware support for Windows users. The update removes the previous cap of 64 threads by supporting multiple processor groups, enabling full use of high-core CPUs like AMD Threadripper PRO 7995WX and Intel Xeon w9 for faster archive creation and extraction.
Compression speed has been improved across zip, 7z, and xz formats, including in the built-in benchmark tool. The bzip2 codec runs 15 to 40 percent faster, while classic deflate compression (.zip, .gz) sees a smaller 1 to 3 percent boost.
The release also improves compatibility with legacy formats like ZIP, CcPIO, and FAT, resolving edge-case extractions without third-party tools. Additionally, it includes several bug fixes and patches for vulnerabilities, including two zero-day issues from late 2023.
