YouTube launches new AI Overview carousels for video searches in the U.S.
Google Search is rolling out a new AI-powered search results carousel, similar to Google’s AI Overviews in Google Search. The feature is designed to help users find relevant content more quickly by surfacing AI-curated videos and short summaries directly in search results.
Available exclusively to YouTube Premium users in the United States, the carousel appears in queries related to shopping, locations, or activities. For example, searching for “noise cancelling headphones” brings up a row of video reviews with AI-generated descriptions and links to related content, helping user with the decision-making process. The responses are generated by large language models using information from both YouTube and the web.
YouTube is also testing a conversational AI assistant that lets users ask questions while watching a video—such as requesting a summary, getting related content recommendations, or identifying background music by title and artist. While these features enhance discovery and accessibility, some creators are concerned they could reduce engagement, echoing similar concerns around AI Overviews decreasing referral traffic in Google Search.
