Organic Maps fork CoMaps launches first preview release, but limited to Android users

CoMaps, a fork of Organic Maps developed after recent disagreements between the original maintainers and some contributors, has released its first preview build. This initial version is currently available only for Android users.

At this stage, the app is not yet listed on the Google Play Store or F-Droid. Instead, interested users can directly download the APK file from CoMaps’ Codeberg source code repository. This option allows early adopters to test the app before its wider distribution.

The CoMaps team has announced plans to expand availability. They aim to make the app accessible through F-Droid soon, and are also working on preparing releases for both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

CoMaps is a GPS navigation app that stems from a community-led fork of Organic Maps, emphasizing transparency, privacy, and a not-for-profit approach. Rated 5, it leverages OpenStreetMap for its mapping data and offers features like Dark Mode without requiring user registration. Alternatives include OpenStreetMap, Google Maps, and OsmAnd.

Nice to see they've managed to make it works in just few weeks ! So far, it's the same app that OrganicMaps (except moderately slow bandwidth, and a dark green color for buttons that is hard to differentiate from regular text), it can pretty much act up as OrganicMaps replacement as it (since the same export/import formats are supported in both apps). I would still wait few more months to see how the community evolves but I hope this will take off.
