Google Photos resumes Ask Photos AI feature with faster search and wider rollout in US

Google has resumed the rollout of its AI-powered Ask Photos feature for Google Photos after addressing earlier performance concerns. This tool leverages Google Gemini models to interpret users’ natural language queries and help them locate specific images within their library. The initial rollout was paused due to concerns about latency, result quality, and user experience, with a Google Photos team member citing these shortcomings as the reason for the delay.

Based on user feedback, Google has enhanced Ask Photos’ responsiveness. For basic searches—such as requests for 'beach' or 'dogs'—users will now see immediate results while the Gemini model continues processing more data in the background. Complex or nuanced photo searches will still leverage the full capabilities of Gemini, but these may take longer to complete as the model processes user requests in detail.

While introducing these performance improvements, Google is expanding the availability of Ask Photos beyond early access, rolling it out to a larger group of eligible users in the United States.
