To no one's surprise, Max branding makes 360-degree turn and is once again called HBO Max
Warner Bros. Discovery has announced it will revert the HBO Max streaming service name back to HBO Max in summer 2025. Executives explained the rebrand follows earlier efforts to broaden the platform by integrating Discovery, TLC, HGTV, and other properties under the Max name in 2023. That move aimed to create a more family-friendly service suitable for children, but the platform's content and reputation increasingly returned to an HBO-centric focus.
Building on this trend, Warner Bros. Discovery introduced a new logo emphasizing the HBO brand just a couple months ago, foreshadowing its commitment to restore the original streaming identity. Leadership emphasized the global strength of the HBO name, with CEO David Zaslav describing it as representing "the highest quality in media." He stated he expects the rebrand to accelerate the service’s international growth trajectory.
This renewed emphasis on the HBO brand signals the company’s intent to leverage strong name recognition and perceived premium value to advance in the streaming market. Notably, Max (now HBO Max) is one of the more recent platforms to follow Netflix's lead, joining the password sharing crackdown trend less than a month ago.
It is worth adding that the HBO prefix remained in use in Belgium and the Netherlands despite the 2023 rebrand, because of trademark conflicts with (respectively) the MAX streaming service by Flemish public broadcaster VRT, and Omroep MAX (a member of the Dutch public broadcasting system).
