OpenAI has reportedly agreed to acquire the AI code editor Windsurf for $3 billion

OpenAI has reached an agreement to acquire Windsurf, the popular AI-assisted code editor, in a deal valued at around $3 billion, according to Bloomberg News. The deal hasn’t closed and both companies declined to comment, but if completed it would mark OpenAI’s largest acquisition, underscoring the high stakes as it expands its capabilities.

The acquisition is expected to directly bolster ChatGPT’s coding features, aligning with OpenAI’s continued efforts to enhance its automated programming tools. Windsurf, which was formerly known as Codeium, recently underwent a rebranding to bring its identity in line with the Windsurf Editor, its flagship product.

The move comes as competition intensifies in the AI coding assistant space, with Windsurf Editor becoming a prominent alternative to other “vibe coding” editors like Cursor.

I wonder if the 3 billion even makes sense, as Windsurf looks like a Visual Code with extension.

Well, giving the OpenAI doesn't have this money (and still waiting for Softbank deposits), I guess it's an equity trade. But if Windsurf thinks OpenAI could ever make some profit, it would be insane to refuse so much money for a tool that is basically a wrapper to OpenAI and al API.
