Microsoft drops password autofill in Authenticator, redirects users to Edge instead
Microsoft has announced significant changes to its Authenticator app, stating that autofill functionality will be discontinued starting in July 2025. At that point, users will no longer be able to use Authenticator to autofill passwords in apps and websites on their phones. Ahead of this change, from June 2025, it will no longer be possible to save new passwords in Authenticator, restricting new entries before the full removal of the feature in July.
By August 2025, users will lose access to any passwords stored within Authenticator, and all unsaved generated passwords will be deleted. Additionally, payment information stored in Authenticator will be deleted from devices after July 2025, impacting those who use the app to store card details.
As a transition, saved passwords and addresses are now synced to each user's Microsoft account. This data remains accessible and can be used with Microsoft Edge's autofill feature, although users need to enable Edge as their autofill provider to maintain seamless password use across devices. While password autofill is being removed, Microsoft Authenticator will continue to support passkeys for authentication moving forward.
