Microsoft to retire Autofill Chrome extension by December 2024: What users need to know

Microsoft has announced the upcoming retirement of its Autofill Chrome extension, effective December 14, 2024. This extension enabled users to automatically fill in passwords, addresses, and payment information saved in the Microsoft Authenticator app across different websites. While Microsoft Edge users already have Autofill integrated into their browser, Chrome users will need to make adjustments before the deadline.

Notably, payment information stored in the Autofill Chrome extension does not sync to Microsoft Edge and cannot be exported or viewed there. Users are advised to manually transfer or delete this data by the cutoff date, as it will be permanently deleted and unrecoverable afterward. Passwords and personal information will still be accessible through users' Microsoft accounts, securely stored with Microsoft Wallet.

Microsoft's decision to retire the extension is part of an effort to streamline their offerings. However, it may also encourage users to switch from Chrome to Microsoft's Edge browser. Those wishing to continue using Chrome can export their data via Microsoft Edge and import it into Google Password Manager in Chrome. This change is expected to impact over 100,000 users.
